Temporary Part-Time Branch Assistant to Join the South Team!

The library’s South Team is currently hiring for a temporary part-time branch assistant for the Exeter, Hensall and Kirkton branches from December, 2024 through March, 2025 for approximately 11.5-13 hours per week. Shifts will include some weekdays, weekends, and evenings. Schedule is subject to change to meet the needs of the library.

Typical Schedule:

Week One:

Monday: Exeter Branch 10:00-2:00 (4 hours)

Tuesday: Kirkton Branch 9:45-2:15 (4.5 hours)

Wednesday: Kirkton Branch 2:45-7:15 (4.5 hours)

Week Two:

Wednesday: Kirkton Branch 2:45-7:15 (4.5 hours)

Saturday: Exeter Branch 9:45-5:15 (7 hours)

Position Summary:

Provides public library service to the community and surrounding area at branch libraries by providing front desk circulation service, reference, information, readers’ advisory and technology support services. Develops community connections to inform creation of programs and services. Assists with collection maintenance.

Duties will include:

  • Reference and readers’ advisory services, including assisting patrons to find information in all formats.
  • Provides technical assistance to library users on all platforms.
  • Uses creativity to develop, prepare and deliver library programs.
  • Markets the library collection through displays and at-desk promotion.
  • Introduces new members to the library and explains services.
  • Maintains up-to-date and confidential membership records.
  • Notifies patrons of overdue materials and arrival of requested materials.
  • Negotiates any problems as required in the absence of the branch manager.
  • Ensures collection is in good condition and relevant through ongoing collection maintenance.
  • Works in more than one branch library and may be responsible for a branch library in the absence of the branch manager.
  • Performs other duties as required by the branch manager.

Qualifications:

  • Post secondary training in public library services, including library technician (Community College, 2 years), or excel program in small library management.
  • 2 years experience (3000 hours) working with the public; familiarity with library service an asset.
  • Clear Vulnerable Sector Check

  • Creativity and ability to be flexible on the job
  • Proficiency in computer use, including Microsoft Office Products, Outlooks, Zoom, OneDrive, electronic databases, internet browsers and library automation systems.
  • Ability to sell ideas/library services

Competitive Compensation:

  • $29.85 – $34.93 per hour, as per the 2024 non-union pay grid
