SLY Program
(Supporting Local Youth) Applications OPENWhat is the SLY Program?
Huron County Economic Development Board’s Supporting Local Youth Program offers grants of up to $1,000 for youth-led initiatives and activities that provide opportunities for Huron County youth between the ages of 14 and 19 years of age in the following priority areas:
- Social Cohesion
- Community Connectedness
- Creative Expression
- Social Justice Issues
- Climate Change and Sustainability
- Mental Health
- Financial Literacy and/or New Economic Activities
Applications will be assessed and awarded on a merit basis. Projects are assessed by a review panel made up of representatives from Huron County’s Economic Development Board, Huron Arts & Heritage Network (HAHN) and community youth from the target demographic.
Funding applications are due by 4:30 PM on November 22, 2024. Applicants will be notified of funding decisions by email no later than Thursday, December 12, 2024.
Please note: This a pilot program. There are currently no plans in place to offer this program on an ongoing basis.

Eligibility Criteria
Applications to the Supporting Local Youth (SLY) Program must meet the following criteria:
- Be between the ages of 14 and 19 years of age at the time of application. Applicants under the age of 18 years of age will require the signature of a parent or legal guardian.
- Applicants must currently reside in Huron County.
- Projects must be youth-led and be targeted towards peers 13 to 20 years of age.
- Projects must provide opportunities for youth in one of the following priority areas:
- Social Cohesion
- Community Connectedness
- Creative Expression
- Social Justice Issues
- Climate Change and Sustainability
- Mental Health
- Financial Literacy and/or New Economic Activities
- Project must take place within the geographic borders of Huron County.
- All projects and activities must be open, unbiased and accessible to youth.
- Projects must be legal, safe and alcohol free.
- Projects and activities must be competed by April 30, 2025.
- A final report on the project or activities will need to be submitted no later than May 16, 2025.
Budget and Expenses
Funds for all approved projects will be held and administered by Huron Arts & Heritage Network (HAHN). Approved project invoices and expense reports will need to be submitted for payment to HAHN.
HAHN will track project expenses and provide project financial updates on a regular basis as well as a final report to be included with the final project report.
Please note: HST is include in the overall project costs.
Eligible Expenses:
- Performer and speaker fees
- Consulting and professional fees (sound technician, graphic designer, and expertise related to the project)
- Marketing and outreach (posters, flyers, social media ads, etc.)
- Materials and Supplies (art supplies, photocopying, etc.)
- Venue Rental
- Equipment Rentals (sound equipment, tables, chairs, portable toilets, etc.)
- Food & Beverages (non-alcoholic) directly related to the project
Ineligible Expenses:
- Projects created and/or driven by anyone age 20+
- Salaries and benefits
- Administrate costs
- Gifts or prizes
- Fundraising activities
- Activities of a religious or political nature
- Capital costs (such as purchase of technical equipment)
- Non-project related travel
- Fines penalties or legal fees
- Contingency or reserve funds
- Membership fees or dues
- Personal expenses
Please note: a focus on local spending is encouraged wherever possible.
Project Venues and Liability Insurance
We recognize that one of the challenges in offering youth-led programming is the ability to rent space to hold activities and programs in. Many venues also ask for proof of liability insurance as a condition of renting the space. To assist applicants overcome these potential barriers, Huron County Economic Development staff may be able to assist applicants by connecting them to existing public spaces in Huron County that welcome youth-led programs and non-profit organizations that may act as project supporters by providing in-kind liability insurance coverage.
Examples of Potential Projects and Activities
We want to hear your creative ideas of what you and your age group would like to do. We encourage you to talk to friends and classmates for inspirational ideas.
Here are some examples of the types of projects we are looking for to get you started:
- Workshops or guest speakers to youth or school clubs.
- Music concerts or coffee houses.
- Film festivals and film clubs.
- Gaming tournaments.
- Wellness programs – yoga, meditation, wellness fair, etc.
- Events that support marginalized or racialized groups – Pride, Newcomer socials, Indigenous learning, multicultural programming, etc.
- Art programs – murals, lessons, open studios, comics and graphic novels, etc.
- Environmental Stewardship – tree planting, trail maintenance, rain gardens, pollinator gardens, community clean-ups, etc.
- Business programming – youth market, guest speakers, incubator activities, etc.
Application Process
- The 2024 SLY Program application form is available here.
- Coaching is available for all applicants. We are happy to discuss your projects with you and provide guidance throughout the application process. Please feel free to reach out to Ruth Montgomery rmontgomery@huroncounty.ca for assistance.
- The applicant(s) will submit the final application to economicdevelopment@huroncounty.ca with subject line: “Applicant Name 2024 SLY Program”. Deadline to submit is November 22nd, 2024, 4:30 PM.
