Multilingual Movie Nights: Ru & Refugee Panel Discussion

In honour of Welcoming Week, the Huron County Museum and the Huron County Local Immigration Partnership are presenting the film Ru, followed by a panel discussion reflecting on the local response to the 1980s refugee crisis, which saw many families arrive from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Join us for this discussion, and the premiere of the museum’s annual Multilingual Movie Nights film series.
Ru is a Canadian drama film adapted from Kim Thúy’s award-winning 2009 novel of the same name. The film centres on the coming-of-age of Tinh, a young girl from Vietnam who moves to rural Quebec and is confronted with adapting to Canadian culture and society. The film is in French, with English subtitles.
The panel discussion following the screening will hear from local refugee sponsors and families of Vietnamese, Lao and Cambodian descent who spent their first years in Canada in Huron County. The panelists will share reflections about their experiences and look at how knowledge and practices about refugee resettlement has shifted since the 1980s.
Film & snacks to begin at 6:30pm, panel to follow at approximately 8:30pm.
Multilingual Movie Nights celebrate the many languages spoken in Huron County! Multilingual Movie Nights will be the third Thursday of each month in the museum theatre this fall & winter. A complimentary light snack and a hot or cold drink will be served for each film. Pre-register on Eventbrite to RSVP, & help us know quantities of snacks needed! No purchase is required to pre-register via Eventbrite. Pre-registration ends one hour before the event, but walk-ins are still welcome as capacity allows. The premiere event and panel discussion are FREE or by donation. Ongoing multilingual movie nights are included with regular admission to the museum (free with your Huron County library card or museum membership)
